The views of the Russian historian-medievalist T.N. Granovsky on the meaning and social significance of classical (humanitarian) and real (polytechnic) education are considered. It is pointed out that Granovsky joined the dispute between representatives of classical and polytechnic education when he published an open letter to the Minister of Public Education of Russia. It is shown that, being a supporter of classical education, Granovsky did not exclude the importance of polytechnic knowledge, so he perceived both types of education as coherent, but not entirely coinciding processes. It is concluded that classical education carries a discursive load, while polytechnic education carries an activity load. It is noted that, from Granovsky's point of view, they are able to form a harmonious whole.
