The article is devoted to the perception of the penitentiary system formed in the second half of the 19th century in tsarist Russia on Sakhalin by three doctors: A.P. Chekhov, N.S. Lobas and B. Howard, each of whom ended up on Sakhalin at the end of the 19th century for various reasons and subsequently created a multi-faceted study of convict island. The motives and conditions of recreating paintings of hard labor by humanist doctors are traced, and attention is focused on their ascetic mission.
