Abstract

The article examines artistic versions of understanding the prospects for human use of artificial intelligence. Two works by British writers were selected for cross-reference: Charles Stross's novel Accelerando (2005) and Ian MacDonald's parable The River of the Gods (2006). The first work raises questions of freedom of choice and changes in the nature of human consciousness under the influence of artificial intelligence; the second demonstrates the paradoxical possibility of merging technologies with ancient Eastern traditions. The authors of the article believe that futurological forecasts should, of course, be treated with a great deal of caution. It is concluded that the reflection of science fiction writers on the potential capabilities of artificial intelligence actualizes ontological, epistemological, value and ethical issues of interpreting and using technologies.
