Abstract

The article is devoted to the history of peat extraction in the Tver Region and addresses the under-researched topic of the first large-scale attempt at peat mining and processing. This initiative was conceived as an ambitious and large-scale project, but it ended quickly and unsuccessfully. For the first time, data from newly uncovered historical sources shift the chronological framework of this topic back to the mid-19th century. Previously, the history of peat mining in the Tver Region was thought to begin only in the late 19th to early 20th century. The article provides a detailed account of the original vision of the creators of this large and innovative enterprise. It also describes the challenges they encountered during the project’s implementation and analyses the reasons for its failure. Most of the data presented in the article are published for the first time. The topic itself – clearly delimited in terms of both time and geography – represents a new contribution to the field of pre-revolutionary industrial history.
