The article discusses the distinctive features of engineering activities. It is noted the importance of determining the psychological determinants of the reliability of engineering activities at the initial stage of professional formation, where engineering thinking is one of the leading factors. Based on the theoretical analysis of domestic and foreign sources, «universal» criteria of engineering thinking are substantiated (logic, rationality, objectivity, reliance on images and symbols, general technical orientation as engineering skills of students, modeling, establishing relationships between subjects surrounding reality). Students of 1–2 courses of engineering specialties of different professional orientations acted as the examined contingent. Conclusions are formed, which describe the characteristics of the manifestation of engineering thinking of students studying in technical specialties. The revealed patterns can act as a resource potential for the reliability of professional activities.
