Abstract

It reveals that the key concepts of Danto's philosophy of history are «narrative» and «narrative sentences» have two main functions: description and explanation. Turning to the problem of representation, including historical, Danto considers language as being in external relations with reality in its entirety: on the one hand, there is a world, and on the other hand, the language used to speak about it. It is noted that the ways of representing the world are included in the explanation of actions, since people will act differently in conditions that differ insofar as their representations differ. The language of representation is characterized by the intentional context, which has the following feature: the words used in these statements do not correspond to what they are usually associated with in nonintentional discourse.
