The article actualizes the value of studying the phenomenon of loneliness as an existential problem of modern society. Loneliness is the object of research in various scientific fields. A brief theoretical analysis of versatile approaches to the study of psychological characteristics and factors of the feeling of loneliness as a subjective experience is carried out. The phenomenon of loneliness is considered as an emotional state, as a psychogenic factor, as adaptability to a social situation, as a quality of the state of consciousness. Based on the analysis of the conducted studies, several types of loneliness are distinguished, which have different modalities and features of manifestation. The constructive and destructive function of the phenomenon is emphasized. The destructive form of experiencing loneliness can become the foundation for the formation and development of a depressive state. Attention is focused on the need for preventive measures to overcome destructive forms of loneliness.
