Abstract

The concept of the history of European civilization by the French thinker of the mid XIX century Francois Guizot and the evaluation of this concept carried out by the Russian philosopher of history, author of the course of universal history, professor of St. Petersburg University of the turn of the XIX–XX centuries Nikolai Ivanovich Kareev are considered. F. Guizot is presented as a historian who contributed his political preferences to science, and N.I. Kareev – as an interpreter of such a phenomenon. The discussion material is built around three themes: the fall of the Roman Empire; the Crusades; France and the Great French Revolution. It is concluded that a historian as a person may have his own interests and prejudices, but as a subject of knowledge he should strive for the most evidential reading of the events of the past.
