The social ideal of housing is considered as a measure of compliance of the living space with relevant values, criteria for assessing reality and activity guidelines. Country and region, natural and climatic conditions, type of dwelling, architectural context, social environment, state of economy, ecology are the most important aspects of understanding the environment. The key features of the phenomenon «family home» are indicated: a) a large time length of the life cycle of buildings; b) following the centuries-old traditional space-planning and structural solutions. It is shown that the nature of the subject-spatial content of residential areas reflects the dynamics of social life. There is a smoothing of the differences between living in a large city and rural areas. The interrelation of the organizational structure of the household and the place of residence is analyzed. It is shown that it is impossible to single out one type of dwelling as a social ideal in the modern world, which is constantly changing its image (balance of properties).
